Cinematography :

The Cinematography course in the BPFTIO is for students who want to be working as a cinematographer for the film, television and ad-film industry. Cinematography is the art and craft of creating motion picture images. Of the most important aspects of cinema, a cinematographer is responsible for the translation of ideas into visuals. This requires a high amount of visual maturity. To be able to do as much as needed and to be able to add to the Director's ideas into a direction which might help the film achieve its intentions.

To be able to do this, students of cinematography course go through an intense amount of practical exposure with opportunity to be able to shoot from still cameras to high-end professional digital motion pictures camera. This kind of input makes the cinematographer technically ready for all kinds of shooting requirements. More importantly, this level of imagination would make the cinematographers imagination vis-a-vis the medium much better thus exposing to him/her the various possibilities.

In addition to the technical & practical inputs, the course will emphasise a great deal on the theoretical aspects and cinema aesthetics. Also, with exposure to film theory and history, the course intends to have the graduates of the course have an overall understanding of cinema.

The benchmark for completion of the course will be a film, produced by the student, wherein  the acquired knowledge and skills in the related discipline are exhibited. All graduating students will be given a chance to showcase their work in the annual graduate show, where eminent personalities from the profession will be invited and all the graduating students get a chance to interact with them and discuss their work.

Entry Qualification - 10+2 Science from any State Board / ICSE/ CBSE or equivalent declared by CHSE, Odisha with minimum 35% marks in aggregat.

Career prospects:

Students graduating from the cinematography stream can get opportunity to be absorbed as Cameraperson in various television channels, Doordarshan and other Government organisations. Besides they have openings in the field of feature film production, documentaries, corporate films, tele-films, tele-serials & advertisement film productions.

 

Sound & TV. Engineering :

Students of Sound & TV. Engineering will learn the art and craft of sound recording for media. The learning process is to grasp the art as well as the relevant techniques and the technology.

Given the fact that there are 1000 films produced in Hindi and regional languages per year, and 150+channels need software on 24/7 basic, one can see the need for trained personnel.

The course will enable a student for entering into the field of sound recording through a structured program. Learning modes are through class-rooms, recording exercise, studying the work of film makers, workshops, lectures by invited guest faculty, study tours and finally working as member of film making team.

Career prospects:

Students graduating from the Sound & TV. Engineering can get opportunity to work as recordist in music, dubbing, re-recording studios, film and video  production houses, media channels, All India Radio & Doordarshan Kendras.

 

Film & Video Editing :

The bachelor of cinema course with specialization in Film & Video Editing, is for the students who want to be Editors for the Film and Television industry

This subject aims to develop student’s understanding of the concepts of editing – whether it’s for the film material or video. In particular the subject is designed to develop the underpinning knowledge and a skill required to work in a particular editing environment and makes students familiar with different editing procedures. This subject introduces the student to the concepts of cinematic time and space and aspects of continuity editing, which helps them to manipulate the possibilities which lies in the raw footage they get. It familiarizes the students with the various platforms – whether it is film, magnetic or digital medium. And they further learn the practical skills of editing on a Non-linear editing setup. The emphasis is to develop understanding of the film medium and the role of editing in film and TV, through regular film screenings and analysis, practical exercises and student film projects. Practical exercises are designed to help develop an appreciation for aesthetics of editing as well as to familiarize them with operating procedures
